What Is Adventure Learning?

Adventure learning is an experiential learning methodology developed at St. Thomas University in the United States to foster creativity through inquiry and adventure in an informal learning environment.

It is an excellent way to develop outdoor leadership skills. Applying adventure learning or adventure-based learning in outdoor environments involves using Kolb’s experiential learning cycle:

  1. Concrete Experience – The learner encounters a concrete experience.
  2. Reflective Observation of the New Experience – The learner reflects on the new experience in the light of their existing knowledge.
  3. Abstract Conceptualization – The learner reflects on their experience, which gives rise to new ideas and helps them accelerate the development of new skills.
  4. Active Experimentation – The learner’s newly created or modified concepts give rise to experimentation and a better understanding of the world.

Applying this experiential education methodology in groups is a powerful way to help participants develop confidence and build leadership skills.

Adventure-based learning experiences can include a wide variety of activities including outdoor sports, challenge courses, races, and scavenger hunts. It often involves an element of risk that tightens focus and makes the experiential learning activity more meaningful and memorable.
